What is the reason why you started your PhD? Yes, you know why, but have you asked this question to yourself out loud? Personally, I decided I wanted to work in the field of knowledge generation, to further my education, and to travel the world. All of those considerations still apply today. The field of research within which I started my PhD in Tübingen, fundamental biochemistry of nuclear pore complex assembly, organically led to the research in my own group now – biochemistry and structural biology of ribonucleoproteins and RNA export machinery. Yet, a Faculty position is more than research: you must keep asking yourself, what are your motivations to begin your next professional endeavour? In this talk, and in the conversation that follows, I will discuss with you the career advice I wish I received before I learned on the job.
About the speaker: Paola De Magistris was appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry of Utrecht University in 2023. Previously, she worked at the TUDelft, as postdoc and Van Rijn Junior Docent, and at the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory of the Max Plank Society in Tübingen, Germany, where she completed her PhD in 2017.
