Susana Coelho, Director of the Department of Algal Development and Evolution, is one of the 107 Portuguese scientists selected as part of the 5th edition of the publication Women in Science (Mulheres na Ciência).

Launched by Ciência Viva on 8 March, International Women’s Day, the biannual publication aims to celebrate the growing impact of women in the research sector, who represent 45% of researchers in Portugal. Since 2016, over 500 women from diverse generations and across various science and technology fields have been selected to increase visibility in the sector, inspire the next generation, and highlight their contributions to advancing knowledge.

Ciência Viva - Agência Nacional para a Cultura Científica e Tecnológica (National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture)

Created by the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology, Ciência Viva aims to bring Portuguese society closer to science and scientists through initiatives that include experimental science in primary and secondary education, interactive museum exhibits, public outreach campaigns, and a network of 11 science centres.

I have always been fascinated by algae, especially after I learnt that they are neither plants nor animals. Although they are key species in our ocean, the biology of these organisms is still largely unknown. I enjoy combining genetic, evolutionary, and bioinformatic analyses to understand how they develop and reproduce.
