DSSS - Cross-regulation of adaptive immune responses and the microbiota via molecular mimicry

Over the last few decades, it has become increasingly evident that the human microbiome has a profound impact on human health. Our lab aims to unravel the intricate regulatory interactions between the immune system and the microbiota. In particular, we focus on identifying and leveraging specific microbiota capable of modulating the humoral immune response to antigens of interest. Our approach involves isolating bacterial strains based on molecular mimicry between bacterial proteins and antigens from pathogens or autoantigens, utilizing a high-throughput screening pipeline. Using this strategy, we have successfully identified microbial strains and their respective antigens that contribute to protection against airborne infections. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that dietary interventions can induce "cross-reactive" autoimmunity through defined microbial antigens.
