Celebrating 30 years of Nobel Laureate Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard
The Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen honours its former Director and Germany’s first and only female Nobel laureate in the sciences during a commemorative weekend symposium.
From 13th to 16th November 2025, the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen marked the 30th anniversary of Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard’s historic Nobel Prize with a weekend of scientific exchange, warm reunions and reflections on three decades of discovery. Members of Nüsslein-Volhard’s research teams from Europe and the United States, alumni from several generations and the institute’s current directors and staff gathered on campus for a symposium of scientific dialogue and reflections on how her work continues to influence developmental biology today.
“It is great to have you at the institute to inspire us, the next generations of researchers”, said Susana Coelho, Managing Director of the MPI for Biology Tübingen, as she opened the symposium to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard’s historic Nobel Prize. Her words set the tone for a weekend that focused on both scientific progress and the personal influence of the Nobel laureate.
A homecoming for a research community shaped in Tübingen
The anniversary event offered a rare opportunity to bring together researchers who collaborated with Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus on their ground-breaking work three decades ago with the current generation of junior researchers, group leaders, directors and staff on the Max Planck campus for a shared celebration.
Friday’s main symposium was held in the newly opened Max Planck House and was open to the entire campus community. Many guests returned to a campus that had significantly changed since their time in Tübingen. In her welcome speech, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard shared an old photograph of the Max Planck campus, to guide guests through the many new buildings and developments. She then presented an overview of the Nobel-winning research that brought international recognition to Tübingen and laid the foundation for modern developmental genetics.
Four themed scientific sessions followed, chaired by Christian Lehner, Anne Ephrussi, Trudi Schüpbach and Phil Ingham. The talks highlighted the diversity of research done by Nüsslein-Volhard lab alumni today. Speakers included long-time collaborators, former group leaders, and internationally recognised experts whose research continues to shape the field. Presentations covered insect axis formation, germ cell biology, muscle development, apoptosis-induced proliferation, cell adhesion and plant cytokinesis. Speakers reflected on their current work while acknowledging the formative role of their time in Tübingen. The day concluded with remarks from Eric Wieschaus, Nüsslein-Volhard’s long-time collaborator and fellow Nobel laureate.
On Saturday, the celebrations continued in a more private setting with a closed gathering attended by 35 alumni and 5 long-time friends of Nüsslein-Volhard. For the host, this event was one of the emotional highlights of the weekend. It offered space to revisit scientific milestones, reflect on shared achievements and exchange personal memories.
Life and work of Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard
Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, born in Heyrothsberge, Germany, grew up in a family that fostered curiosity and creativity. She developed an early fascination with biology and went on to study in Frankfurt and Tübingen, completing her PhD in 1974 at the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research. After a research stay at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, she returned to Tübingen in 1981 and later became Director at the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research, now the MPI for Biology Tübingen.
Together with Eric Wieschaus, Nüsslein-Volhard investigated how a fertilised egg develops into a complex organism. Their pioneering genetic screens in Drosophila identified key genes controlling early embryonic patterning - work that fundamentally reshaped developmental biology and earned them the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The discoveries turned Tübingen into a global centre for molecular genetics and delivered insights later shown to be conserved in mammals, with profound implications for understanding development and disease.
In her own laboratory, Nüsslein-Volhard expanded this work to maternal-effect genes that establish the embryo’s main axes, producing findings now considered essential knowledge in developmental biology. Many leading scientists trained in her group, a testament to her influence as a mentor and scientific leader.
Committed to improving career conditions for women in science, she founded the Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard Foundation in 2004, using part of her Nobel Prize funds. The foundation supports female doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in Germany with children, helping them balance family responsibilities with experimental research.
A legacy that continues to inspire
As the weekend drew to a close, participants expressed a shared sentiment: Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard’s work did more than transform developmental biology – she helped build a scientific community in Tübingen grounded in curiosity, integrity, and creativity. Her influence continues - in the discoveries rooted in her early work, in the careers of the researchers she trained, and in the opportunities created through her foundation.
The anniversary symposium was both a celebration and a reminder: her legacy is not only a defining part of the institute’s history, but a continuing source of inspiration for future generations of researchers.
